Santa Barbara showed up—and showed off—for the inaugural State Street Pirate Scavenger Hunt, hosted by Friends of State Street
With sunshine overhead, pirate legends in the air, and clues scattered from Stearns Wharf to Arlington Plaza, 14 teams and 73 enthusiastic participants took to the streets in a celebration of local history, community spirit, and good old-fashioned fun.
What we hoped would be an afternoon of connection and creativity quickly became so much more. From babies in strollers to adventurers aged 80 and up, teams represented the full spectrum of our community: families, UCSB students and alumni, workplace groups, out-of-town visitors, newly minted Santa Barbarians (just two months in!), the energetic dancers from World Dance for Humanity, members of the Strong Towns organization, and more.
Along the journey, participants tackled trivia at eight of Santa Barbara’s most iconic landmarks:
Stearns Wharf, MOXI, Santa Barbara Historical Museum, Lobero Theatre, La Arcada Plaza, Santa Barbara Public Library, Granada Theatre, and Arlington Theatre. Every step connected history, architecture, and curiosity—one clue at a time.
And we couldn’t have done it without our local business community! Twenty downtown businesses joined the route, showcasing why State Street remains the heart of Santa Barbara. From charming boutiques to beloved eateries, the hunt was not just a game—it was a celebration of our local economy in action.
Even better? Friends of State Street purchased gift cards from each of those businesses to use as prizes during the awards ceremony. A heartfelt thank you to the shops, cafés, and creative spaces that helped make this experience so vibrant.
The hunt kicked off at our Friends of State Street headquarters inside the CEC Environmental Hub, and the fun continued all the way to the finish line celebration at M Special Brewing Company, where teams gathered for a well-earned toast and some lively prize giveaways.
Congratulations to our top-performing crews:
- Birthday Booty took home first place.
- Sherlock Homes and California Kooks earned honors for their spirited sleuthing and creativity.
We also unveiled something special: a custom perpetual trophy that will be passed down to future champions! That’s right—this year’s winners may have claimed the treasure, but the legend will live on. The next team to hoist the trophy? That’ll be in 2026.
It truly was a perfect California day—sunny skies, great company, and a joyful sense of discovery. Most importantly, it reminded us why we care so deeply about State Street: it brings us together.
We’re already plotting next year’s hunt—and yes, we’re keeping the pirate theme, but with an exciting new twist. So keep yer ears to the wind and a weather eye on the horizon… announcements will be comin’ when the tide is right. You’ll want yer crew ready when the call goes out!
