Asphalt Art Comes to State Street

State Street got a lot more colorful. Friends of State Street helped bring painters into the project and supported the installation as this major public artwork took shape downtown.

Asphalt Art Comes to State Street

State Street is now a vibrant canvas. Large-scale public artwork has transformed one of downtown’s busiest corridors into a bold, people-centered space.

Friends of State Street helped connect painters to the project and supported the installation alongside the City of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture.

About the Artwork

From Carrillo to De La Guerra, the installation introduces striking patterns and color designed by artists Eddie Jiménez and Irene Ramirez. Inspired by Indigenous weaving traditions, the artwork not only adds beauty and cultural meaning—it also improves visibility and safety, helping people better navigate bike lanes and intersections.

Located near the bustling Saturday Farmers Market, this installation will be experienced by thousands each week and will remain in place for up to two years, creating a lasting impact in the heart of downtown.
